Who goes there?!?

I need to get home!

Is there a standard way to get back to the home page of any website, from any page within that site? To most Web developers, designers, power users, etc. that answer might be easy. They'd say "just click on the logo". And yep, sure enough, 99% of the time (not scientific) it'll take you back to the home page.

So what happens when a client, friend, co-worker says to you (you being someone that designs or bullds Web sites), "Hey man, how do I get back to the home page?", this about your latest design. Momentarily you look dumbfounded, and say, "Uh, dude, just click the logo." They get back home, but they didn't know how, they didn't know that clicking the logo on a site takes them home. You go off on a rant saying this is the case on like every Web site, and that you're the expert, etc., they're probably thinking, "geesh, what are other people gonna do that don't know the magic logo link". Hmm, maybe we beta test and get feedback for a reason.

A couple of sites with wide user bases that include HOME links in the main navigation:

cnn.com

nytimes.com

netflix.com

After more than a few occurances like this regarding a beta site or design draft, I think it's safe to say that not everyone knows the way "home", or at least our way home. So put that HOME link in the main navigation, and feel confident everyone will surely get home.
